The Government and Hyphen Hydrogen Energy (Hyphen) are set to embark on National Green Hydrogen Roadshows led by the Chairperson of the Green Hydrogen Council and Director-General of the National Planning Commission, Obeth Mbui Kandjoze.

The roadshows, which are scheduled to commence in the Khomas region, will tour major towns spanning all 14 regions of the country.

They will be hosted by each of the regional Governors, Chairpersons, and their respective Constituency Councillors, with presentations from Hyphen.

The events aim to share information about the Hyphen project and the recently launched Socio-economic Development (SED) Framework at Keetmanshoop.

“We look forward to engaging with various stakeholders to explain more about the project and share information about how the SED Framework can benefit Namibians. We are eager to better understand our stakeholders’ inquiries, address any concerns they may have, and foster an open and transparent conversation about the project, our timelines, and goals,” stated Hyphen’s Head of ESG, Toni Beukes.

The Hyphen project is being developed as the first step in the implementation of GRN’s strategy to establish a large-scale green hydrogen industry in Namibia, aimed at supporting economic growth in the country.

The total investment for the project is US$10 billion.

The Hyphen project is estimated to create up to 15,000 new jobs during the construction phase and 3,000 permanent jobs during its operation, with a target for around 90% of these positions to be filled by Namibians. Additionally, Hyphen is aiming for 30% local procurement for goods, services, and materials throughout both the construction and operational phases.

Hyphen’s project stands as one of the largest green hydrogen projects globally and will contribute to the decarbonization of Namibia’s energy systems while exporting green ammonia to international markets.

Hyphen aims for an annual production of one million tonnes of green ammonia by 2027, with plans to increase annual production to two million tonnes by 2029, thereby reducing 5-6 million tonnes of CO2 emissions every year. At full scale, Hyphen’s project could produce 350,000 tonnes of green hydrogen annually.

Hyphen is a joint venture between Nicholas Holdings Limited and ENERTRAG, with the Namibian government set to hold a 24% equity stake in the project.
