The Brief set out to survey a basket of eight essential food items a shopper would probably buy monthly.  Three major wholesalers in Windhoek were chosen, namely: Metro, Windhoek Cash ‘n Carry and Wecke and Voigts.

The aim of the survey is to provide shoppers with guidance on which wholesaler among the three, offers the cheapest basket of goods for that particular month. Moreover, the survey strives to retain the same commodity brands in its basket composition. However, if brands are not available alternatives are utilised.

Basket Composition:

  • 5-litre Sunflower oil
  • 10kg Top score maize meal
  • 10kg Marathon sugar (white sugar)
  • 4kg Real Good Chicken
  • 10kg Tastic rice
  • 5kg Pasta Polana Macaroni
  • 10kg Baking Flour
  • 1-litre 6’s nammilk full cream

After analysing our data for the month of July, Windhoek Cash ‘n Carry surfaced as having the cheapest basket composition for the second time, costing N$1,325.10. This represents a 5.7% decrease in its basket cost from the month of June to July.

Similarly, Wecke & Voigts though having a high-priced basket composition of N$1,406.10 and ranked the most expensive, exhibited a 2.37% decrease. Mainly attributed to its 4-litre cooking oil’s price drop from N$214.5 to N$192.5 and 10kg Bokomo flour’s price decrease from N$188.10 to N$171.10 from June to July.

Metro ranked the second cheapest with its basket going for N$1,367.92, this represents a 6.34% decrease from last month’s basket price of N$1,454.00. Additionally, Metro maintained a month-on-month economical price for its 4kg Real Good Chicken of N$172.99.

However, Wecke & Voigts and Windhoek Cash ‘n Carry prices for the 4kg Real Good Chicken 4kg item remained highly priced month-on-month at N$212.9 and N$211.6, respectively.

Metro and Windhoek Cash ‘n Carry’s Tastic Rice remained the same month-on-month priced at N$235.99 and N$230.00, respectively. However, Wecke & Voigts’ price for the same rice increased from N$215.10 to N$236.20.

Note: We do not take specials or loyalty card discounts into consideration. When we do find certain goods on special, for example: “Get N$10.00 off when buying 18 (medium) eggs and pay N$55.00”. We will log the price as N$65.00 to exclude the special.
