MTC Namibia has deployed four dedicated LTE network sites at Rössing Uranium Limited, in a move aimed at strengthening digital infrastructure at one of Namibia’s flagship mining operations.
The network sites, handed over on Wednesday, were installed at the request of Rössing to improve connectivity across sections of the mine that previously experienced limited or no network coverage.
The rollout introduces enhanced mobile voice and high-speed data connectivity across key operational zones, supporting real-time communication in an environment where reliability is directly linked to safety and production efficiency.
As mining operations become increasingly data-driven, the private LTE network is expected to improve coordination between teams, enable faster decision-making, and support the integration of digital tools across the operation.
Speaking at the inauguration, MTC Managing Director Licky Erastus said the project goes beyond basic connectivity.
“This project is about improving how people connect and work on the ground. It is an enabler of safer, smarter, and more efficient mining operations. By bringing reliable, high-performance communication into complex industrial environments, we are empowering teams with the tools they need to make better decisions in real time and operate with greater confidence.”
He added that the initiative reflects a broader shift in the company’s strategy.
“…in the past few years, MTC has adopted a business model, through our Enterprise Business Unit, focused on delivering customized enterprise solutions tailored to the specific needs of private sector partners. Today’s milestone is a clear demonstration of that strategic approach in action.”
Rössing Managing Director Johan Coetzee said the infrastructure is central to modern mining operations.
“Today we commission the newly installed and upgraded four towers on our mine…, mining is more than the heavy machinery, blasting, hauling, and long hours of physical work. We goes unseen is that mining runs on something just as critical: data. Real time, reliable, and constant data.
“Every truck we dispatch, every drill reading we analyze, every safety alert we depend on, these all rely on strong, uninterrupted communication. Without it, we are not just inconvenienced, we are exposed. Quite simply, without reliable connectivity, we are operating without full visibility.”
The deployment forms part of Rössing’s broader push to modernise its operations, improve productivity, and align with evolving global mining standards.
For MTC, the project underscores its role in supporting digital transformation across Namibia’s mining sector, with tailored connectivity solutions increasingly seen as critical to operational resilience.
The development also signals a wider shift towards smart mining, where connectivity, data and automation are becoming central to improving safety, optimising performance and extending asset life in a competitive global environment.
