
Reconnaissance Energy Africa Ltd. (ReconAfrica) has announced it will begin drilling its Kavango West 1X exploration well in northeast Namibia before the end of July.
According to ReconAfrica President and CEO Brian Reinsborough, the company has completed all necessary permitting requirements and has safely moved its drilling rig to the site. Final rig assembly and safety checks are currently in progress.
“Everyone at the Company has worked diligently to get drill-ready on the Kavango West 1X prospect and we are excited to spud the well in the coming days,” Reinsborough said.
“We recognize the importance of this play opening well holds for our shareholders, the local communities in which we operate and the broader energy industry in Namibia.”
The Kavango West 1X well marks the second test in the Damara Fold Belt play and is expected to reach a total depth of approximately 3,800 metres.
The primary drilling target according to the Canadian oil and gas company , is a 1,500-metre thick Otavi carbonate reservoir, which forms part of a structural fold extending 22 kilometres in length and three kilometres in width.
The prospect was identified using modern 2D seismic data.
ReconAfrica has identified more than 19 additional prospects and leads within the Damara Fold Belt and recently expanded its exploration footprint by a further 5 million acres through a Memorandum of Understanding signed in Angola.
Meanwhile, the company has also announced that Board Director Iman Hill will step down from her role effective 31 July 2025, citing international work commitments.
Following her resignation, the board will comprise five members, including three independent directors.
ReconAfrica holds petroleum licences covering approximately 13 million contiguous acres across the Kalahari Desert region, spanning northeastern Namibia, southeastern Angola and northwestern Botswana.
