The Chamber of Mines of Namibia has paid tribute to the late Dr. Sam Shafiishuna Nujoma, Namibia’s Founding President, hailing his immense contributions to the country’s independence and economic development.
Speaking at the Business Namibia Memorial Service, Chamber of Mines First Vice President and QKR Namibia Navachab Gold Mine Managing Director George Botshiwe described Dr. Nujoma as a visionary leader whose legacy continues to shape the nation.
Dr. Nujoma, who led Namibia to independence in 1990, was remembered as a dedicated freedom fighter and a revolutionary leader whose efforts laid the foundation for the country’s sovereignty and progress.
The mining sector, a key pillar of Namibia’s economy, according to the Chamber of Mines, benefited from Dr. Nujoma’s leadership and policy direction.
“The Chamber of Mines acknowledges Dr. Nujoma’s significant contributions to the mining sector, which has been the cornerstone of Namibia’s economy. His policies and initiatives have paved the way for sustainable development and growth within the industry, benefiting countless Namibians,” he said.
Notably, Dr. Nujoma pursued a Master’s degree in Geology from the University of Namibia in 2005 at the age of 76, setting an example for lifelong learning and inspiring many young Namibians to study mining-related fields.
“His vision for economic emancipation was anchored in the sustainable development of minerals and other natural resources, with an emphasis on value addition to maximize benefits for the Namibian economy,” Botshiwe said.
“He saw the youth as the future of the nation and emphasized equipping them with the necessary technical skills and cultural values to drive socio-economic development.”
Botshiwe said Dr. Nujoma’s influence extended beyond politics, fostering unity and reconciliation among Namibians while championing patriotism and democracy. His policies helped create an environment conducive to industrial growth and national progress.
As Namibia mourns its Founding Father, the mining industry has pledged to uphold his vision for a prosperous and self-reliant nation.
“We are committed to carrying forward his vision and building upon the foundation he laid for a prosperous Namibia,” Botshiwe said.
