The National Petroleum Corporation of Namibia (NAMCOR) says it has reported significant progress in its oil and gas exploration activities, working alongside international partners to unlock the country’s energy potential.
In an update issued on Friday detailing key developments in offshore exploration and appraisal activities in the Orange Basin, NAMCOR emphasized that ongoing efforts across several offshore blocks have positioned the region as a global hotspot for hydrocarbon exploration.
NAMCOR highlighted its involvement in exploration across multiple blocks, including 2814 (PL003), 2913A & 2914B (PEL 39), 2913B (PEL 56), 2813A (PEL 83), 2914A (PEL 85), and 2813B (PEL 90).
NAMCOR reported that in Block 2913B (PEL 56), operated by TotalEnergies in partnership with QatarEnergy, Impact Oil and Gas Namibia, and NAMCOR itself, post-well studies on the Venus wells are progressing.
These according to Namibia’s national oil company, include core analysis, logging data, and fluid sampling, with the work set to continue until 2025.
“The joint venture is fast-tracking development studies for a potential Venus project,” NAMCOR noted, adding that drilling operations on the Tamboti-1X exploration well, spudded in October 2024, are ongoing and contributing to further evaluations of the block’s potential.
NAMCOR stated that Block 2813A (PEL 83), operated by Galp in collaboration with NAMCOR and Custos Energy Ltd, has yielded promising results from the Mopane-1A appraisal well, completed in November 2024.
“The well revealed light oil and gas condensate in high-quality reservoirs with excellent porosity, permeability, and minimal CO2 levels,” NAMCOR said.
The Mopane-3X exploration well was spudded in January 2025, complemented by high-resolution 3D seismic surveys to support ongoing development.
According to NAMCOR, the Kapana-1X exploration well in Block 2813B (PEL 90), operated by Chevron Namibia Exploration Ltd with NAMCOR and TRAGO as partners, did not find commercial hydrocarbons. However, it provided valuable geological insights that enhance the joint venture’s confidence in future exploration activities.
NAMCOR also reported that Shell Namibia, QatarEnergy, and NAMCOR are conducting extensive post-well studies on the Jonker, Enigma, and Graff wells in Block 2913A & 2914B (PEL 39).
“These studies aim to enhance understanding of the reservoirs and apply this knowledge to other opportunities within the block,” the company stated, adding that the work will continue through 2025.
NAMCOR confirmed that in Block 2914A (PEL 85), joint venture partners Rhino Resources, Azule Energy, NAMCOR, and Korres have begun drilling the Sagittarius-1X exploration well.
“The campaign, which started in December 2024, marks the beginning of a multi-well program that underscores the partners’ commitment to unlocking the region’s energy resources,” NAMCOR said.
