The National Petroleum Corporation of Namibia (NAMCOR) has confirmed hydrocarbon discoveries at the Mopane-2A well, with gas-condensate identified in the AVO-3 reservoir and light oil in the AVO-4 reservoir.
Both reservoirs according NAMCOR, feature high-quality sands with no water contacts, according to a company announcement.
The Mopane-2A well, part of an ongoing exploration and appraisal campaign, was spudded earlier this month in the AVO-3 area.
NAMCOR revealed that Saipem’s Santorini drillship will now proceed to the Mopane-3X well, scheduled to spud in January 2025, to explore additional prospects in the stacked AVO-10 and AVO-13 reservoirs.
Concurrently, a state-of-the-art 3D seismic survey is underway to optimize future development plans.
The exploration campaign is being conducted within blocks 2813A and 2814B under PEL83, with Galp as the project operator holding an 80% interest. NAMCOR and Custos each hold a 10% stake in the venture.
Following the discovery at the Mopane-1A well, Galp retained the Santorini drillship to avoid mobilization and de-mobilization costs, allowing continuous exploration efforts. The drilling campaign leverages newly processed 3D seismic data to evaluate the Mopane discovery further and assess its size and quality.
Initial drilling activities commenced with the Mopane-1X well in November 2023, followed by Mopane-2X, both of which encountered substantial light oil columns. The estimated resource potential from these discoveries is at least 10 billion barrels of oil and gas equivalent.
