NamPower completes construction of 54MW Anixas II Power Station

Namibia’s national power utility, NamPower, has completed the construction of the 54-megawatt (MW) Anixas II Power Station, a project valued at N$1.28 billion.

The inauguration of the power station is set for February 21 in Walvis Bay.

According to NamPower, the Anixas II Power Station will operate alongside the existing 22.5MW Anixas I Power Station to provide firm, dispatchable, and reliable generation capacity to the Namibian grid.

The facility aims to enhance energy security and self-sufficiency, ensuring stable power supply across the country.

Additionally, Anixas II is expected to support Namibia’s transition to renewable energy by serving as a dispatchable power station, helping to mitigate the intermittency challenges associated with renewable energy sources.

Construction of the power station began following the signing of an engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) contract between NamPower and the FK Namibia joint venture (JV) in March 2022. The JV consisted of Israeli firm FK Generators & Equipment Limited as the lead partner, alongside Namibian companies August Twenty-six Construction and Phim Investments CC.

Originally scheduled for completion in December 2023, the Anixas II Power Station was funded, constructed, owned, and is set to be operated by NamPower.

The facility utilizes Internal Combustion Reciprocating Engine (ICRE) technology and runs on heavy fuel oil (HFO), with the capability to switch to diesel, liquefied natural gas (LNG), or compressed natural gas (CNG) in the future.

NamPower currently owns and operates Anixas I along with two other power stations, contributing to a combined installed capacity of 459.5MW.
